Principal's Reflection

Sunday is Father’s Day.  Being a dad is a fantastic opportunity.  Some people are lucky enough to have more than one ‘father figure’ in their lives.  I hope that all of those people are reminded that they are appreciated.  Dads have the opportunity to play a fantastic role in the dynamic of family.  Sometimes it is a fine line for dads to walk between being a friend, a motivator, a coach and a critic.  It is never an easy job but it is, when done well, a tremendously rewarding one.  In our Australian setting it is easy to  think that most of our social leadership comes from an interpretation of how the polls are going.  Leadership is not about doing what is popular – it is about doing what is right. Good dads do that.

Father’s Day marks the start of National Child Protection Week.  It is sad, in some ways, that we have to have a week to raise the awareness of child abuse within the community but sadly, most harm happens to children within family settings.  All of us need to be aware of how important it is to nurture our young people and give them the best possible start in life.  Most often, children will model their own behaviour and attitudes on those they see in their parents – being a parent is an awesome responsibility!

Interviews will be conducted this week for a new College Deputy Principal for Shalom.  Mrs Helen Stanley will be a big loss to the College next year as she steps into a very active retirement.  Please pray that the discernment process to find a suitable replacement goes well.

Yr 12 QCS testing is now over.  The Year 12 students deserve congratulations on the positive attitude they brought to a very demanding couple of days.  A big thank you also to Mr Christian Taylor for his outstanding overview of the whole process.  I am sure that the hard work that the Year 12s and their teachers put into the preparation for the event will bear fruit.

Yr 11 Leadership Days were run this week.  The Year 11s have indicated that they are very ready to take on the challenges of being the first leaders of a Vertical Pastoral Care system.  I am very hopeful that before the end of this term we will be able to announce our new leaders for 2011.

Welcome to our visitors this week from Balilla Pinchetti High School in Italy.  The staff and students from Terano are hosted by Shalom families for the next few days.  I hope that we might be able to return the visit at some point in the future!

Defensive Driving Course – parents with Provisional and Learner drivers at home should consider the opportunity to participate in the course advertised later in the Newsletter.  The P&F are supporting this course by covering the cost of the bus to Gladstone.

Musicfest –Could all students please return reply form in relation to travel requirements for this October competition. A letter has been distributed to all members of Concert Band, Choir and String Orchestra A. If any students missed out, please come to the Precinct staff room and collect or email me, and I can send the letter digitally. Students who are in both Concert Band and Choir will need accommodation – private if possible, otherwise we will organise something in Brisbane with a teacher supervising.

Students won’t return home, after the performance, until VERY late Saturday night. So that we can still hold this BBQ, could I ask please for any volunteers involved in the music department to help out. Please forward names and preferred times (6-9 or 9-12) by email as soon as possible.

Performing Arts subjects – Please feel free to contact one of our teachers if students have any queries re any of the Performing Arts subjects as electives for either Year 9 or 10.

Equestrian

The annual Fraser Coast Equestrian competition was held on the 26th and 27th of August. Over 120 riders from schools throughout the Wide Bay district travelled to the Maryborough Showgrounds to compete in a wide range of riding disciplines. Both rider and mount have to be well trained and highly skilled to perform across such a varied range of tasks set in this two day competition. As always the level of competition was very high and all events were well supported and strongly contested. Rain, wind and bitterly cold conditions greeted the riders on Thursday, adding to the difficulty level of the Showjumping, Dressage and Campdrafting events.  To gain a place in any event is an achievement appreciated by all students.

Shalom College's Equestrian team turned out this year in their new uniforms with matching bridle browbands on their horses and looked very professional. Year 12 team captain Amanda Gatt led our riders in the Grand Parade on Friday, Shalom narrowly missing out on the team parade presentation prize to Munduberra State High School.
Shalom students returned to Bundaberg with an impressive number of ribbons. Sally Moorhead placed very well and also won her Novice Dressage event which was a remarkable effort considering the calibre of horse and rider combinations she competed against.

Shania Kleidon, Alix Coonan and Amanda Gatt achieved very good results throughout their events with many colours of ribbons adorning their horses' necks after presentations. Hayley Bowman and Tasmin Anderson also competed strongly. We also welcomed year 8 student Blake Santalucia into the team this year but unfortunately Blake could not compete at Maryborough due to an injury sustained by his horse during training for the event. We will look forward to Blake competing in the Shalom colours next year.

A big thank you to the parents of all Equestrian students who keenly support their child's passion. Many people would not realise the logistics and costs behind owning a horse and competing as a chosen sport. Travelling with a horse float, camping in icy conditions, feeding, grooming, constantly preparing and cleaning equipment all go into a standard weekend of work for families during a competition. These parents would realise that students working closely with a living animal derive an enormous sense of satisfaction from that rider/horse relationship and they have to be very organised to be able to work together and compete effectively.

Well done to all of our competitors who were perfect Equine ambassadors for our College.

Quiet Achiever

This week’s Quiet Achiever is Year 10 English student, Sarah Hurren. All Year 10 English students have a Resource Centre reading period once per cycle. Sarah surprised her English teacher by actually requesting a second page for IMGthe folder where she records the details of the books she has read as the first one was full, half way through the year. This is a worthy achievement as many students struggle to complete the first couple of entries. In fact, this particular teacher has never had a similar request since the reading program was introduced.

Congratulations, Sarah, on your conscientious efforts. Your devotion to reading will be reflected in your overall application to, and success with, all English tasks.

Gladstone Port Corporation Bursary

The Gladstone Port Corporation (responsible for the Bundaberg Port) has generously offered to sponsor a $1000 Bursary that will be presented at this year’s Academic Awards night. The award will be given to a senior student who is aiming at tertiary education. Further details about the criteria will be announced at a later date.

Australian Catholics Magazine

The Spring 2010 edition of Australian Catholics is being sent home with your child in the coming weeks. The edition explores the impact of new technologies on how we connect with each other, and how we can use these technologies to make a difference in the world. The article on Mia Northrop and the Vindaloo Against Violence campaign shows how today, one person's actions can have a global impact.

Sunday Markets Roster

If you receive a phone call from me as Markets Convenor, could you please call me back on my mobile phone as I only work on Sundays. Would it be possible to return my call as soon as you can, in case I need to call in a replacement from another shift. Also, if you cannot make your rostered date, please let me know as last Sunday we had only two people attend instead of the normal seven helpers. Thank you to those parents who have volunteered for the markets roster, I am grateful for your reliable assistance.
