Getting inundated by polls, talking heads and politicians kissing babies, is, I guess, an inevitable aspect of a Federal election. It has been interesting this week to note that one candidate is being defined by her lack of religious affiliation and the other is defined by his commitment to religious tradition – and both seem to be negative factors for them! Elections are really important times in the life of a society. It is a fantastic opportunity that we, as citizens, have a say in the type of society in which we want to live. I hope that every eligible Australian exercises that right carefully and thoughtfully. I hope that every person is not frightened to inform that choice by the value set that underpins their life. Throughout an election campaign I hope we learn about what our candidates are passionate about and where their values lie. Similarly, I get my nose out of joint when I am told that my faith convictions should not, in some way, inform my vote. The story below is written by William Bausch.
Once there was a small farming town that could be accessed only by a narrow winding road. The last curve that had to be negotiated before entering the town was particularly dangerous and many visitors came to grief there. The parish priest often made mention of the accidents, using them to remind his parishioners to make sure they were Good Samaritans to anyone who was injured or in need of emergency accommodation. They responded generously and rostered themselves to assist accident victims. They knew that whatever help they gave was truly a religious work. One Sunday, a parishioner suggested that they buy an ambulance so that they could get the injured to the hospital more quickly and in greater comfort. So the parish priest preached and the people gave generously until they had their ambulance, for they knew that this was truly a religious work they were undertaking. Some months later, one of the parishioners who happened to be a member of the town council suggested to his fellow councillors that the road be widened and the dangerous curve be removed. Now it happened that the farm that bordered the dangerous curve belonged to the mayor who promptly rejected the proposal. The councillor then approached the parish priest and asked him to have a word with the mayor and even ask the parishioners to sign a petition to have the curve removed. But the priest and the parish council decided that they should stay out of politics. So, on the following Sunday, the priest preached on the Good Samaritan and encouraged the people to keep picking up accident victims and attending to them. And that is exactly what they did, for they knew that it was truly a religious work.
Thanks to the Yr 12s for a great experience with them on Retreat last week. I hope that their parents have been able to discuss the experience with them. They were a pleasure to be with and a real credit to their parents.

On the morning of Thursday 29th July, the Japanese visitors from Shalom’s sister school in Japan (Sakado High School), left Bundaberg with plenty of unforgettable memories and wonderful experiences. Their beaming faces were a reflection of their enjoyable stay with us here at Shalom College.
Our Japanese visitors mingled well within the Shalom community, regardless of language barriers or confusion with Aussie slang. The positive experiences and intercultural relationships that were developed would have benefited the Japanese students immensely and would have contributed to their maturity and given them life-long memories.
We were especially privileged to witness the Japanese students’ performance of “Soran Bushi” (a traditional Japanese song) and also their beautiful cappella version of ‘Waltzing Matilda’ at our college assembly. Students in the Year 9 Japanese class were also fortunate to be taught a traditional dance and they were very excited to have the opportunity to dance with our guests.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation for all those who supported our guests. I am especially grateful to the host-families for welcoming our visitors into their homes and providing opportunities to immerse them in Australian life. Without these generous families, we could never have achieved such a fantastic result.
Each year, Shalom College hosts a group of Japanese visitors from Sakado High School. If you have missed out on this wonderful cultural experience this year, we will be asking for support from the Shalom community again next year…watch this space!

The release of subject lines for Year 11, 2011 and SET Plan interviews will be postponed by a week. This means that SET Plan forms (including lines for subject selection) will be distributed on Tuesday 10 August (next week) and SET Plan interviews will be conducted during the week of 16 - 20 August (week after next).
Please note that parents are welcome and encouraged to attend SET Plan interviews but in most cases it is difficult to reschedule these outside of school hours given the numbers of students and timeframes involved. If you have a specific concern that requires a follow-up meeting with the Careers Advisor, VET Coordinator or me, please do not hesitate to contact us to make an appointment.
We apologize for any inconvenience these postponements have caused and thank you for your understanding.

From 1 - 8 September Shalom will be hosting a group of 21 students and 3 staff from Balilla Pinchetti High School in Tirano, northern Italy. We are currently looking for host families for these students but as they are aged from 15-18 would prefer to place them, where possible, with Shalom students of similar ages and interests, namely Years 10-12. If you would like your family to be a part of this unique experience, your son/daughter should pick up an explanatory letter and host application form from the College office. I would be pleased to answer any enquiries on 4155 8144 or by email mccullos@shalomcollege.com.

This year for the first time the Queensland History Teacher’s Association in association with the Queensland State Library held a two day intensive workshop for high performing history students. Shannon Fogarty in Year Eleven was nominated to represent Shalom College and she was chosen as one of ten Queensland students to attend these two days in Brisbane. We congratulate Shannon on her selection. The following were her comments on return from the workshop.
Mrs Debbie Bolam
SOSE Co-ordinator
On the 19th and 20th of July I was fortunate enough to take part in the first Annual Young Historians Workshop at the State Library of Queensland. For those two days I spent my time working with the amazingly dedicated library staff and nine other talented individuals who shared my passion for this field.
The workshop mainly covered how to access and use both the on and off-site resources provided by the library. Some of these resources included their online databases, micrographics, and catalogues. Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed my experience I would like to encourage all students to look at the State Library of Queensland website, as their online resources are available to all members of the public, and contain information across all subject areas. Go to www.slq.gov.au for more details.
I would also like to thank Mrs. Bolam for the amazing opportunity she provided me with, as well as the entire library staff for their amazing hospitality.

Catholic Schools Festival – Could all families please contact me as soon as possible if there are any changes required re travel and accommodation arrangements for the Festival next weekend. These changes are particularly required for staff travelling with students. Medical forms also need to be handed in BEFORE they board coaches/buses etc. Please return by Wednesday at the latest so that they can be sorted out into the different travel days.
Pre-Festival Concert – Thank you to all families and friends who attended the concert last Wednesday night. With only 1 week to go before the Festival, all of our groups are ready to show the ‘city folk what the country folk’ can do – in a big way. Thank you also for your entry donation.
BBQ – Thank you to all volunteers who manned the 1/8/10 BBQ. Proceeds help to pay expensive charter coaches for the Catholic Schools Festival. The next BBQ will be 17 October and will be manned by the Choir and Vocal Ensemble.
Rhapsody Rotorua 2012 – A list has been started for this tour. Please contact me if you would like to put your child/ren on the list.
Bundysearch4astar – A very big THANK YOU to staff and students who spent many hours after school last week and in particular all day last Sunday helping with back stage, lighting and sound requirements for this very popular event. Congratulations to all Shalom students who were successful in being chosen for the finals which will be at the Moncrieff Theatre, Saturday 21 August.
The Ideal of North – This faaaantastic vocal group hit town Tuesday 4th October. I saw them in performance and workshops during the June/July holidays at the National choral conference and they were very impressive. Keep an eye on this column and other advertising and mark in the date. I will have a book of tickets to sell soon.

Forty-six members of the Shalom Rowing squad travelled to Lake Kawana recently to participate in the 2010 South Queensland Schools championship regatta. Under trying conditions in the wind and showers our members managed to make it through 16 of the 23 final races that we had crews eligible for. Out of those races we came away with nine crews finishing in the top three. An outstanding effort considering what the crews were up against. Congratulations to Jack Willoughby and Blair Bretag for winning the Schoolboys Year Eight Double Scull title and to Rebecca Surmon who rowed with Sophie Jarvis from St Luke’s to take out the Schoolgirls Double Scull title.
A special mention and thanks to all parents and students that helped out, not only over the weekend but for those who gave hands on assistance to get our boats and gear to and from the event and in and out of the water, the coaches and the group in general for their excellent team spirit. Socialising between the other school teams and parents at the event added to an already marvelous effort and all concerned should take a bow.
As a group we are looking forward to our next away trip which will be for the Queensland School championships at Rockhampton in September.

COLLEGE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Congratulations to all those students who participated on Thursday 22 July. A huge number of students competed in the track and field events and it was the largest attendance we have had as a school for quite some time. Also, the House spirit is alive and well with the eight Houses fighting out for honours over the past week through post carnival events. The last of these events will take place on Friday 6 August. The announcement of the winning House will occur at the next full school assembly.
BDSSSA ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
On Wednesday (pre-events), Thursday & Friday (25 – 27 August) the Bundy District Carnival will take place. If the students finished first or second in a school event they will have gained selection in the school team to compete at this carnival. There will be a team list go up next week and a meeting with all team members will also occur next week.
WINTER SPORT
Congratulations to all those students who have participated in the Winter Sports Season this year. Winter Finals Day will be next Wednesday (11 August) and Shalom will have numerous teams competing in that day. A list of results from finals day will be out in the next newsletter.
SPORTSMANSHIP and CONDUCT
One aspect of sport this season has been the poor conduct and sportsmanship of students across several sports. Although this is generally a minority of students, there is an expectation here at Shalom, that students represent themselves and the school appropriately both on and off the field. Shalom has always and will always take a tough stance on misconduct of student behaviour particularly towards officials but also towards opposition teams. Sport is about participation and not a win-at-all-costs attitude. Winning is enjoyable but how you win and conducting yourself on the field makes the game so much better. On finals day, I look forward to seeing Shalom students thanking officials and opposition teams at the end of their games and respecting the effort everyone is making so that sport does not die out in Bundy.

For this term’s visit, the Bloodbank was overwhelmed with the numbers of Shalom students wanting to donate. It was great to see the first timers who donated as soon as they turned sixteen. There are a large number of students who turn up regularly even though they are nervous to start with. Laden with food and other goodies, students seem to enjoy and feel proud of their efforts each visit. We thank the following students for their attendance at this community service. Hannah Negri, Ella Whately, Taryn Hirst, Harry Templeton, Liam Lowth, Joshua Petersen, Christo Groot, Mark Charge, Luke Duffield, Kellie Bailey, Anna Cavanagh, Tyler Sajko, Daniel Fitzpatrick, Matthew Weedon-Smith, Olivia Harvey, Jessica Lester, Mitchell Greer, Sam Richards, Kyha Redman, Nicholas Trost, Nathan Greenhalgh, Sam Collinson, Jordan Peters, Jessica Clarey, Aashnaa Ishri, Karli Pressler-Gallagher, Storme Martin, Matthew DePaoli and Tyson Knight.
Thanks also to the parents who supported their children and teachers who donated.
Please see Mrs Bolam or Mr Philips to have your passport signed.

During Lent this year Shalom College raised funds for Caritas Australia through Project Compassion. It was uplifting to hear that our efforts contributed to the almost $9.4 million donated to Caritas in 2010. This set a new benchmark of generosity and compassion for the world’s most vulnerable communities.
Jack de Groot, CEO Caritas Australia said: “Project Compassion is the biggest event on Caritas’ fundraising calendar; contributions received through the appeal define the scope of our work and enable Caritas Australia to deliver life-saving development infrastructure in communities marginalised by extreme poverty or devastated by disaster.”
