Principal's Reflection

Michael Grose works with young people and families.  I read an article of his entitled, “Are You Your Child’s Hero?”  It has some good thoughts for parents.

We all need heroes.  We all need someone to look up to, someone you can rely upon and someone who you can aspire to become like.  So who are children’s and young people’s heroes?  Big Brother survivors? Sports stars? Soccer players? Media personalities?  These are the usual suspects, but they don’t come close when children and young people nominate their heroes.

A study released by the Australian Childhood Foundation in Victoria found that young people rank their mums and dads a number 1 and 2 in the list of their three most admired people.  Forty-two per cent of 10-17 year olds surveyed nominated their mothers as the person they admire most, while thirty-one per cent of kids nominated their fathers first.  That’s a whopping 73% of young people who nominate a parent as a hero.  Friends, siblings, grandparents, relatives and teachers were next.  Delta Goodrem and Lance Armstrong, who have both overcome cancer, were the only people to make the top 10 heroes list.  So mums and dads of Australia take a bow.  You are doing well, as this age group can be a tough group to satisfy.

This finding confirms the critical importance of adult relationships with children and the roles that siblings, friends, relatives and teachers play in their lives.  We so often place emphasis on media, music and sports heroes so it is easy to forget about the important contribution made by real people to the lives of children and young people.  Two common themes emerge when we talk with children and young people about their admiration for their parents.  First, they want a connection with their mothers and fathers in very ordinary ways such as attending school events, picking them up from school and reading and playing with them.  Interestingly, over a quarter of the young people in this survey say they would like to spend more time with their parents.  Second, children and young people admire their parents’ humanity and their willingness to stick by them even though they can give them a hard time.  They say things such as “I admire my dad because when I yell at him, he doesn’t yell back.”

The survey found the world is an uncertain place with 76% of young people saying they believe kids are growing up faster than they used to.  It is reasonable to suggest that kids are now seeking out parents to act as reference points in this rapidly changing world.  So how do you become a childhood hero?  It’s not hard.  It helps if you are a parent but you don’t have to be a mum or a dad.  You do need to have a connection and a willingness to put in for a child or young person.  You also have to reveal your human side.  It’s quite a relief really not having to be superhuman.  Above all, it is the everyday things that adults do on a regular basis that become heroic and worthy of admiration in the eyes of children.  Half the battle is being there for them and with them!

Mobile Phones – I spoke to all the students at Assembly this week to remind them of our processes around the use of mobile phones.  Should a necessity arise to send or receive a text message or call (usually to a parent or employer), all a student has to do is approach a member of staff and make the call in their presence.  At all other times, phones will be confiscated, delivered to the office and can only be collected by a parent.  It is amazing how often a parent arrives to collect the phone before the end of the school day – how did they know it was confiscated?  In order to discourage the incorrect use of mobile phones at school, we will, from this week on, place a student on afternoon detention if he or she is found to use a phone incorrectly.  I also suggested to them that should they notify their parent that a phone has been confiscated by using someone else’s mobile phone, this may indicate the need for a second detention.  I would urge parents to support the College in this fairly simple and straight forward procedure.

My Appraisal – if you would like to contribute to my Formative Appraisal, please contact Jan Aplin by phone or email aplinj@shalomcollege.com and a form will be forwarded to you.  These would need to be back to Mrs Aplin by Monday June 21.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Alex Standfast, Mr McMahon & Matthew Depaoli

Thomas Bauer, Kellie Bailey & Jack Page

Scholarships Received

Matthew De Paoli and Alex Standfast were awarded a scholarship from the AIEM (Australian Industry Engineering Manufacturing Network) program. The program works in conjunction with the Wide Bay TAFE to place and encourage students to take up a trade. It is a talent identification program where students are selected to undergo Work Experience and then continue this work with a Bundaberg industry after finishing school.

Congratulations are also extended to Thomas Bauer, Kellie Bailey and Jack Page on receiving the 2010 Defence Technical Scholarship.

To be successful the students had to complete an application demonstrating their knowledge of trades and explain how they would cope in a real life crisis situation. The three students were up against students from other States and Territories and had to go through a very competitive selection process before being successful. They are to be commended for their efforts.

Curriculum

Year Ten Semester Two
Module Selection

Year Ten module selection confirmation forms for Semester Two were distributed on Thursday 10 June.  These forms provide a listing of selections made late last year.

Parents are encouraged to read and consider this information carefully. If a change of core module selection is required a green Application for Subject Change form (available from the Year Coordinator or the Office) must be used. If a change of elective module selection is required, the lower portion of the form should be completed, detached and returned by Friday 18 June. Please note that a reply is only necessary if there is a change to be made.

While we are trying to avoid changes of classes for students between Semester One and Semester Two in both core and elective modules this may be unavoidable given the increasing range of options we are making available to students. Please contact me directly if you have any concerns about your child’s selections for Semester Two.

Year 10, 11 and 12 Examinations

The Year 10, 11 and 12 end of semester examination timetables have been posted on year level notice boards, the College intranet and the College website at http://www.shalomcollege.com/curriculum_senior_forms.htm

It is important that students who are absent from examinations contact the appropriate Year Coordinator immediately.  In most cases, supplementary sittings will be required of students who miss scheduled examinations. For further information on procedures for missed examinations please see pages 9 and 10 of the Senior School Record Book 2010.

End of semester examinations are scheduled as follows:
Year 11 & 12 - Monday 21 to Friday 25 June
Year 10 - Wednesday 23 to Thursday 24 June

During examination blocks Year 11 and 12 students are only required to attend when an examination is scheduled.  All Year 10 students must be in attendance throughout the examination block.

Student Welfare

Mobile Phones:
As you are aware the College allows students to have mobile phones at the school. Many parents like to know their child is safe to and from school.

At school, students are asked to have their phones switched off.  If a student needs to make contact with a parent during the school day then they are asked to go to a teacher and ask to use the phone or send a text message.

What we don’t want is students using phones during classes or in break times. If a student is found using a phone it is confiscated and the teacher then hands the phone into the College office for collection by a parent.

We are finding that within an hour or so of the phone being confiscated we have the parent at the front office wanting to collect the phone. Obviously the offending student has used another student’s phone to make the call. We have made it very clear to the students at our assembly that they must not do this. We have also stated that from now on consequences will result if a phone is confiscated – hopefully the students will simply go and ask a teacher to either check messages or use the phone if they need to.

Grooming:
A reminder that hair, for both boys and girls, must be of a natural colour as per College expectations.

Social:
Our next College social will be on July 23. I am hoping that a few parents may be able to assist with supervision. Please contact me here at the College if you can help. I would be most pleased to hear from you!

Thank you:
Many Year 9PC classes have been out on their camps at Chaverim since the 17 May. Last week I headed out with my Yr 9I PC girls along with Mr Knott’s 9E girls.

I must compliment these students for their outstanding behaviour and their excellent attitude. Some of the students found some of the activities quite challenging but they pushed themselves. This was particularly evident on the high ropes circuit. Some girls didn’t think they would even ‘give it a go’ - one young lady in this category thought that she would do the first element only but ended up completing the entire circuit. I was also impressed with the encouragement and support they offered each other. So thank you to both these groups for a wonderful camp.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Tarl Condoleon (Yr 12) for attending the camp on the Wednesday night. This young man is the “buddy” of my 9I PC group. The Yr 9s really appreciated his attendance and were so thrilled to see him there.

Exams for Years 11 and 12 commence on June 21. Good luck to both year levels – work hard.

Sports News

DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY
Last week, 20 Shalom students, as part of the Bundaberg District, travelled to Monto for the Wide Bay Cross Country trials. Sally Lewis, Sam Daff and Jonathon Hoffman gained selection in the Wide Bay team for 2010.  A special mention must go to Sally and Sam for winning the U19 Girls and U17 Boys divisions respectively.  All three students will compete at the State Cross Country Championships in Brisbane next month.

WINTER SPORT
The first round of winter sport competition has been completed.  Shalom has again fielded numerous teams across all sports and the results were as follows:

Rugby League
Open 1sts - Shalom defeated BSHS 16 - 12.
Open 2nds - Shalom lost to BSHS 22 – 20.
U13 - Shalom defeated BSHS 38 – 10.  With the scores level at 10 all at half time, the Shalom boys came out and scored two early tries in the second half to break Bundy High’s confidence.  A great second half in defence allowed Shalom to keep BSHS scoreless. MOM – Lachlan Lanskey

Football (Soccer)
Junior Girls - Shalom defeated BCC 8 – 0.  The Shalom girls started the season well with a convincing win over BCC. With a good number of experienced players teamed with some first time novices, the Shalom team showed fair play and good team work.  A vast number of talented Yr 8’s make up this team which bodes well for the future.  Shalom’s best player was Emily Drinovac.
Junior Boys - Shalom Red defeating Shalom Black 4 – 1. The two Shalom teams faced off in the first round with the more experienced Red team securing victory.  Shalom Red scored the first two goals before Shalom Black pulled one back through Alex Bennett. Shalom Black were valiant in defeat and kept pushing forward but could not find the back of the net.  Goal scores for Shalom Red were Jackson Skopp, Joel Haack and Santiago Esparza (2).  Both teams passed the ball round well and all looks good for positive results for this season.
Open Boys - Shalom lost to BSHS 5 – 0.  Shalom took on a very skilled BSHS and were well and truly in the game at half time with the scores level at nil all.  However Shalom couldn’t keep the intensity up and ran out of steam in the 2nd half.  Best for Shalom were Joel Schoenberger and Lachlan Ward in defence and Rohan Killer and Emilio Mas in attack.

Basketball
Junior Boys – Shalom White defeated BSHS 56 - 24.  Solid start for the Shalom team in week 1 against Bundy High.  Using their big men, Sam Treloar and Julian Ebert, effectively to donate the boards.  Sharp shooting by Jake
Bennett.  MVP for Shalom were Julian Ebert and Luke Pickard.

Netball

13yrs
SCCW d SCCB 17-13 MVP Taylor Ford, SCCR d BSHS in a convincing win MVP - Beth Royan.
15yrs SCC d BCC 19-5 MVP Kelly Myler
Opens 2nds - SCCB d SCCR 24-5 All girls played well
Open 1sts - SCCB v KSHS by 6 goals MVP Jessica Webster, SCCR d BSHS 22-19 MVP Meaghan Bowmaker

PIERRE DE COUBERTIN
Every year each High School throughout Queensland is offered to nominate a student to receive the Pierre De Coubertin award.  This award was named after the founder of the Modern Olympic Games, Baron Pierre De Coubertin.  The award is designed to recognise students who demonstrate initiative, teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play through a participation in a variety of sports in the competitive arena.  The award strongly supports physical education and sport in schools and promotes a commitment to positive values.  It aims to recognise good sportsmanship and not just elite performance.  This year Shalom’s Awardee is Year 12 student Rebecca Hollindale.

Rebecca has been a keen and active participant in several sports throughout her high school life.  Her major sporting highlight to date was making her debut for the QLD Fire Open Women’s Cricket team in 2009.  Rebecca was Age Champion in Cross Country this year and has represented Wide Bay in Football as well as participating for Shalom in Volleyball and Athletics.  A very worthy recipient!!

STATE TEAM
Congratulations to Sam Tobin for gaining selection in the QLD U19 Squash team.  Sam finished runner-up in the U19 State titles and will now travel to Dubbo next month to play against NSW.

STATE KNOCK – OUT COMPS
Cricket
The Shalom Open Boys cricket team took on Hervey Bay SHS in the Wide Bay final of the State Knock-out Cricket competition.  HBSHS batted first and were rolled for 83 with Matt Gavin and Peter Howard the chief destroyers taking 3 for 5 and 2 for 15 respectively.  Matt Gavin then rounded off a good game making 48 not out and Steven Grogan finished on 20 not out and Shalom reaching the total in 11 overs to finish the game at 1 for 87.  The boys now move to the next level against Gladstone SHS in October.

Rugby League
All the best to the U13 Shalom Rugby League team who (at time of print) is playing Kingaroy SHS in the Wide Bay Final.  A full report of their game will be in the next newsletter.

World Vision Global Leadership Convention

On Wednesday 2 June Stephanie Killer, Prue Arkell, Robert Hoffman and Karly Barrett attended the World Vision Global Leadership Convention in Kawana Waters. During the day we participated in activities designed to highlight the factors which have led to the Global Food Crisis (GFC) which the world is currently facing. We also saw documentaries and speeches which taught us more about the GFC and the effects that it is having on the lives of millions of people living in poverty. It is now our aim to spread this awareness and to encourage lots of people to get involved in the 40 Hour Famine this year. This is one way that you can DO SOMETHING REAL for those you many never meet, but who desperately our help.

The 2010 40 Hour Famine is being held from 20-22 August. Go to www.worldvision.com.au/40hourfamine for more information.

Quiet Achiever

Our Quiet Achiever for this week is Year 8 student Holly Fasso.

Holly recently entered the Open Sugar Craft section of the Bundaberg Show. After working on the piece  for over two  months her hard work paid off as she became the Winner of the competition. This kind of decorating takes plenty of time and patience.

Holly is to be congratulated on  the work produced. She is certainly a very talented young lady.
