Jesus, if nothing else, was a fantastic storyteller. Last Sunday’s Gospel was the story of ‘the Good Samaritan’. Jesus seemed to be able to weave so many different layers into his parables that were pointedly relevant to his listeners. The Story of the Good Samaritan spoke powerfully of the need to live out the spirit of the law before the letter of the law. The two blokes who passed by the injured traveller were both ‘religious professionals’ but they were on their way to celebrate liturgy and if they were to come in contact with blood, they would have been ‘ritually unclean’ and unable to participate. So they took the easy way out so that they could worship God. Jesus makes it clear that God demands a compassionate heart before blind obedience to the law. As we move closer to a Federal election both sides of politics seem hell bent on convincing the Australian public that they will be tougher than the other side on the issue of Border Protection. I hope that somewhere in this debate, which is important, someone will highlight the facts around this issue.
These facts are irrefutable. We know that 90 per cent of boat people are found to be genuine refugees – people in real fear for their lives, people who have no other way of escaping their countries (because there is no queue there, and their only option is abject poverty or worse). We also know that measured against 42 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, including 16 million refugees and asylum seekers, Australia's annual allocation of fewer than 14,000 places under the humanitarian program is small. The number of boat people is only a tiny fraction of this number. Of the 14,000 places Australia offers to refugees, fewer than 3000 arrive in the boats that so threaten our border security. The vast majority of ‘illegals’ in this country are Europeans who arrive by Jumbo jet and overstay their visas. This issue certainly seems to be one which is conveniently blown way out of proportion and the discussions that surround it seems to be largely devoid of the compassion of heart that we, as Christians, are confronted with in the Gospels.
Being able to live in a country where everyone has a right to participate in the democratic process is a fantastic gift. I hope that every person who professes to have some faith in the Jesus of the Gospels will allow their democratic rights to be informed by that belief in the discussions that will take place on so many important issues that will lead up to this year’s election.
New Faces – we welcome lots of new faces to Shalom this Semester. We have thirteen new students and several staff who are filling permanent or short term vacancies. New staff members include Mrs Fiona Bath, Mr James Belluz, Mr David Bond, Mrs Debbie Burgess, Mr Michael Reid, Ms Angela Samways, Mr Criag Steinhardt, Mrs Karen Stewart and Mr Robert Hellyar.
Parents & Friends Meeting is on next Tuesday (July 20) at 7pm in the Staff room. At the meeting we will be considering an adaptation to the girls’ blouse and the boys’ shirt at Shalom. It is possible that this adaptaton would be introduced for Yr 8 cohort in 2011. I would welcome comments from parents and encourage you to attend this meeting.
College Athletics Carnival is on Thursday of next week. I would ask that parents very actively support the College by ensuring that every child attends and participates in the day. Participation in such days is not an ‘optional extra’ at Shalom.
A School Social will be held on Friday July 23rd from 6-9pm in the Sports Centre. Any parent who is able to assist with some supervision would be very welcome to contact Mrs Austin-Campbell.
New Zealand Music, Confraternity Netball & Rugby League – all had great tours over the holidays. It was fantastic to hear all staff who gave their time to enable these trips to go ahead speak so positively about the conduct and attitude of all of those young people who took part. They were a tremendous credit to their parents and the College.

Welcome back to Term 3. We have a busy term as always.
Firstly I would like to welcome our new students who have joined us this term. They are Year 8 - Brittany Meyer, Ella Muscat, Maddison Rejtano and Samuel Vohland. Year 9 - Jessica Johnson, Mary-Ellen Pascoe, Andre Payne. Year 11—Andrew Haimes, Melody Meyer, Glor-Ann Pascoe, Alice Payne, Jaizdon Corrigan and Amber Lutter. We hope that you enjoy your time with us.
Next Thursday 22 July we have our Interhouse Athletics Carnival. Can I remind all students that this is a compulsory day of attendance. It is hoped that all students will join in the spirit of the day and participate in most events.
Students are to wear their full sports uniform on the day which includes a hat. If for some reason your son or daughter does not have a sports uniform then the formal uniform is to be worn. Your son or daughter would then change into suitable clothes. These students will then need to change back into their formal uniform to go home. I appreciate your cooperation on these matters.
Our next College social is on 23 July in our Sports Centre. It follows the “buddy’ afternoon. The social is well supervised so please encourage your son or daughter, particularly in the younger grades, to attend. The Year 12 Social Committee do put in a great deal of effort to make sure the students have fun.
If any parent can assist with supervision your help would be greatly appreciated. Contact me here at the College if you are able to do so.
I must compliment the Year 12 students for the way in which they have undertaken the trial QCS days. Well done seniors.
The first few weeks back after holidays always highlights the need for students to remember our grooming policy.
You will find that the Year Coordinators may have spoken to your son about the length of his hair and the need to have it cut. You will find a note in his record book if this is the case.
In the student record books it is clearly stated the boys should have their hair above the collar in length, cut short at the front and ears should be visible. Some boys have ‘wispy bits’ at the front - these should not be longer than the ear lobes please.Hairstyles should be conservative thus the ‘spiked’ look with lots of hair product in the hair is not allowed at school.
For the girls their hair should be neat and tidy at all times too. In the record books it does state that hair must be off the face.
Colours and foils must be natural – for both boys and girls.
Our students are constantly reminded about our expectations. If your son or daughter does not comply with our grooming policy they will receive a letter asking that the hair style be changed/fixed. Any queries on our policy may be directed to me here at the College. Another reminder to all students that gum is not allowed in the College – if a student is found to be chewing gum then a Saturday detention is automatic.
Lastly, we are more than willing to lend money to students if they have forgotten their lunch or need bus money but this must be repaid to the office the following day. Your cooperation in this matter would be appreciated.
Once again I thank you for your ongoing support.
Mrs Elizabeth Austin-Campbell

Our quiet achievers this week are two of our confraternity students. Danielle Giebel from the netball and Sam Daff as part of the rugby league.

Both students have just attended carnivals in Brisbane over the holidays. During that time they both displayed great sportsmanship and positive attitudes. They proved to be excellent role models for younger participants by always helping out and providing encouragement when needed. Both Danielle and Sam are worthy recipients of this week’s Quiet Achiever Award. Congratulations to you both.

Rhapsody Rotorua 2010 – During the holidays, thirty-two students and four teachers travelled to New Zealand for this annual music festival. This tour group was so good that the coach driver has requested that he our driver in 2012 or was it the special present we bought him!? The students were kept busy the entire time with performances at two local Primary Schools, workshops, festival and honour group rehearsals, two public concerts, sightseeing, which included a traditional Maori Hangi ending the week with skiing on Mount Ruapehu. Yes, we actually got up to the top of the mountain and skied – sorry to rub that in 2008 students. Thank you to all who helped in any way with this successful tour.
Rhapsody Rotorua 2012 – I will commence planning for this tour during Term 4. If students would like to put their name down now, please contact me and I’ll start a list.
Catholic Schools Festival – Thank you to all students who returned their information form by the due date. I will start working on the finer details for this trip next week, but in the meantime, if you haven’t returned your form, please do so as a matter of urgency. I can email a form to those who missed out – hopefully that is not many of you. If you know now how much to pay as per the letter, please make these payments to the College office. Return travel - $40. One way - $25. Accommodation per night - $45. If you are unsure, wait until the next information letter comes home in the next week or so. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.
BBQ – the next BBQ for the music department will be 1st August and will be run by the members of Concert Band, Monday Morning Band and Jazz groups. If you are available to help, please email me as soon as possible. Otherwise there will be a form distributed at next week’s rehearsals.

At the end of last term, Mr Griffins Yr 9G Religion class had the wonderful opportunity to participate in an Anointing Mass, celebrated by Fr John Daly, at Kepnock Grove Retirement Village. The Anointing Rite was most beautiful, with each of the students laying their hands on the shoulder of an elder person, whilst Fr John anointed their foreheads and hands with oil and prayed a blessing over them. It was clear that the residents were grateful for the presence of the students and the care they showed through the symbolic gesture of the laying on of hands. After Mass, the residents and the students had morning tea together.
Peter and I both reflected upon how the experience allows the students to think about others in our community and provides them with an opportunity to show their support to the elderly of our faith community, who often are not able to join the faith community for regular services. The Mass, also provided a wonderful setting for the elder and younger people to interact in a manner that, may stretch the students comfort zones, but is ultimately life-giving to both groups.

Shalom netballers had a great week when they headed to Brisbane to take part in the QISSN carnival held at the State Netball Centre at Mt Gravatt.
Shalom Black played some outstanding netball to be placed first in Division Two at the end of the pool games. The girls went on to win both their quarter and semi finals before meeting up with St Michaels in the final. After a hard fought game Shalom Black were unlucky and came away with second place which was a tremendous effort.
Shalom Red consisting of mainly Year 10 and 9 players were placed top of their pool at the end of the first round. They went on to continued success to win their quarter finals and were beaten in their semi final against Matthew Flinders Dalby. They then had to play off for placings against The Cathedral College and missed out by the narrowest of margins to be placed fourth in Division Three.
Most valuable player for Shalom Black was Ashley Black and for Red was Taylor Kirchner.
All in all an outstanding week of netball was had by all and a fantastic overall result for Shalom. The girls are to be congratulated on their behaviour and sportsmanship displayed both on and off the court throughout the week.
Both teams were once again fortunate enough to have sponsorship from local businesses and we would like to thank Rum City Foods, McDonalds West Bundaberg and Zac’s Meats for their generous support.

During the June/July holidays six Shalom students flew to Papua New Guines to walk the Kokoda Track. Lauren Ballinger, Thomas Bauer, Rebecca Surmon, Sam Richards, Jordan Peters and Daniel Salmon along with eight other youths and five adults from around Bundaberg left on Tuesday 29 June and walked the track from Wednesday 30 June to Wednesday 7 July.
It was a hard grueling trek and overall well worth the effort, and I know that we all have a great sense of achievement.
