My daughter Christina, (almost 4) is the worst player of ‘Hide and Seek’ I have ever come across. She often goes to great lengths to get me to play with her but after I have curled myself into some cramped space around the house to hide, she gets distracted by the dog or the TV or air molecules passing and forgets to keep looking for me. Meanwhile, my legs are locking up and my back spasms and I am afraid no one will think of me until dinnertime! I came home from work one day this week and all I wanted to do was collapse in front of the TV news. This wasn’t a good idea according to Christina and she wanted to play ‘hide and seek’. I fobbed her off and told her that Daddy was too tired. Last night at the College Board meeting, one of the members tabled for our spiritual reflection a piece by a lady called Janet Cassidy who wrote about how precious time is. She wrote,
“It’s easy to be preoccupied with computers or mobile phones. Have you ever had one of your children try to talk to you while you were working at a computer or talking on the phone? Was it so important that you could not stop for just a minute and give them your full attention? Sometimes I think the things that keep us the busiest are actually things we use as diversions.
How often have you missed a great opportunity to interact with your child because it seemed more important to be grumbling or gossiping with someone else? How many precious moments have slipped by you? Just imagine what it feels like to be a kid around you while you are doing this!
Kids love their precious moments with their Mum or Dad. Please don’t take them for granted. Give your kids the gift of you.”
Having read that, I am going to try and take more time to play ‘Hide & Seek’ with Christina and Nicholas (I hope that they get better at it). Missed opportunities is the water that flows under the bridge in life – and that water is gone forever. Adolescents won’t be as obvious as kids the age of mine in asking for your time but they still need it just as much but in different ways. Parents have more influence on their children than their child’s peers – even if it might not seem that way. Time is one of our greatest gifts, for ourselves and for those we love.
Mrs Helen Stanley has made the decision to retire from Shalom at the end of this year. Helen has been a member of staff since the College opened and has been Deputy Principal for 15 years. In that time, she has made a quite outstanding contribution to this community. Helen will be a great loss to Shalom in so many ways. Next term, she and husband Greg are taking the first six weeks of term as long service leave. Ms Angela Myles will take up the position as Acting Deputy Principal during this time and Ms Mary Taylor will fill the role of Acting Assistant Principal Ministry.
We wish well all of the students and staff participating in the Confraternity Netball and Rugby League carnivals which will be on during the first week of the school holidays. I am also very, very grateful to the staff members who are giving their time to enable the students to participate. I think we have seven staff members attending the carnivals in Brisbane. We have two Netball teams and our open Rugby League team. All of those students and staff have been training for the event for months and I have no doubt that they will represent the College extraordinarily well.
Staff Changes – sadly two staff leave the College at the conclusion of this semester. Ms Aimee McDonald who has done a wonderful job in our music department is moving with her husband to the Sunshine Coast. Also, we lose Ms Laura Oliver who has taught Dance and Drama at the College. Both these wonderful people have made Shalom a better place for their presence. They will be greatly missed by their students and colleagues. Aimee McDonald will be replaced by Mr James Belluz who comes to us from a school in Canada and Laura Oliver will be replaced by Mr Dene Kermond who will move with his family to Bundaberg from Sydney.
First Day for Term 3 will be Tuesday July 13th.
This will be the final Newsletter for the Term.

On the 5th and 6th of June ten Year 10 students completed the Practice Expedition for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.
The students completed an overnight walk in the Cordalba forestry. The students planned the route and navigated through the bush to reach their destination. Over 25 kilometres was covered in a journey that included travelling along the disused railway that used to connect Dallarnil and Cordalba sixty years ago.
All participants gained valuable experience and are well prepared to tackle the Qualifying Expedition at Coongara Rock in July.

The year 8 Catering classes have in recent days been celebrating the conclusion of their introductory time in this subject by preparing and eating a two course dinner in our college restaurant. Much excitement has ensued in this activity as well as it providing a valuable time to sit and enjoy each others company. The students would agree they have had a fun time in this subject this semester where they have learnt many new skills and had the opportunity to produce a range of healthy recipes. We trust that many of them will return to this subject in later years at the college and will continue to practice their new found skills at home for their family members. We look forward to welcoming the rest of the Year 8's to Catering following the June holidays. Keep enjoying Year 8!

WINTER SPORT
The results from Week 2 of Winter Sport:
Football
Open Girls - Shalom defeated NBSHS (1) 2-0. The North Bundy team was a formidable opponent with plenty of talent, speed and experience. The Shalom girls were victorious through constant attacking raids from the strikers and a strong defence from the backs. However the Shalom team victory was mainly due to the efforts of the goalie and player of the match Anthea Linderberg. Anthea saved several attempts at goal from North and she deserves most of the recognition for the win with her outstanding ability to put herself on the line to help team mates.
Open Boys - Shalom defeated BCC 3-0. After a very tight first half of footy, a couple of positional changes was a major factor for Shalom’s victory. A BCC send off for an illegal challenge, plus the tireless efforts of strikers Marc Oshima and Nathan Greenhalgh, put the game beyond doubt in the second half.
Basketball - Junior Boys - Shalom Black defeated St Luke’s 51-16. A good team effort by all 8 players however Luke Smith, with his superior ball handling abilities, was voted Shalom’s MVP.
Hockey - Open Girls - Shalom defeated NBSHS 1-0. Best players for Shalom were Sarah Vicenzotti and Ashleigh Martin. Both girls backed up and supported their younger and less experienced teammates well both in attack and defence. Amanda Vicenzotti, in goal, made many courageous saves. A great effort from all players.
Netball
13yrs - Shalom Red d NBSHS 23-10. MVP Gemma Grogan, Shalom Black lost to BSHS 21-6 Best on the court for black was Louise Harding Smith, Shalom White had a convincing win over St Luke’s with all players performing well.
14yrs - Shalom Black d NBSHS 28-3 MVP Finlay Holmes, Shalom Red won well against BCC with all girls playing well.
15yrs - won on a forfeit
Open 2nds - Shalom Red d GGSHS 52-18 with Shalom’s best being Cassie Beck, Shalom Black d RDSHS 34-8 with all girls playing well to secure the victory.
Open 1sts - Shalom Black d NBSHS 33-9 MVP Jessica Webster while Shalom Red came from being 4 goals behind to win over KSHS in a very close contested match 28-27. MVP Bridine Dempsey.
Rowing News
Students who placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd at the Head of the River Regatta received their certificates at school this week. I would like to thank Mr Peter Donaldson from Bundaberg Travel World for his sponsorship of the certificates as well as Mr Bruce Bretag for donating the non-championship medallions.
The rowers are gearing up for the Central Queensland Schools Championships at Bucca this weekend. I would like to wish them luck with this competition.

The Confraternity Rugby League team are looking forward to their trip to Brisbane during the holidays to defend their division “B” title. Forty teams from around the state will be taking part in the annual carnival. Coach John Gilbert is extremely happy with the preparation the boys have put in. They are so far undefeated in the seven matches they have played. Mr Gilbert said that he is looking at his senior and more experienced players to step up and lead by example to the younger members of the team.
Other schools Shalom will play against include Emmaus - Rockhampton, Seinna College - Sunshine Coast and Southern Cross - Scarborough before entering the quarter finals on Tuesday afternoon.
Many thanks to our main sponsor Rum City Foods for their continued support. Good luck to all involved.

During the first week of the school holidays two Shalom netball teams will travel to Brisbane to strive to uphold proud traditions of excellence when the girls take part in the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball carnival being held by host college Clairvaux MacKillop.
The girls have been training hard since earlier this year and are hoping for a similar result to last year after taking out Division One for the second year running. Both teams will play other schools from around the state including Rockhapmton Grammar School, Emmaus College, Xavier College and The Cathedral College.
Both teams have very versatile players and are looking forward to the challenge of the week long carnival. This year the girls have been lucky enough to have been sponsored from local businesses and our appreciation goes out to Rum City Foods, McDonalds West Bundaberg and Zac’s Meats.
