Classes Conclude Term III

We are now over half way through the school year. A long way past for our Year 12s! The enthusiasm of the start of a new year has gone and students need to be in this race for the long haul. Long distance runners have a term called ‘hitting the wall’ when everything hurts and they feel like giving up even though most of the distance is behind them and the end of the race is in sight. I find plenty of students suffer the same thing during term 3. Consistent effort and the ability to ‘pace yourself’ are pretty vital skills to have. Getting started on assignments and projects early is crucial. Most of us know, from first hand experience, the panic and poor work product that is caused by leaving things to the last minute. When runners ‘hit the wall’, they just need to convince themselves to take one more step and break down the race into achievable goals – get to the next corner, get to the next drink station, go one more kilometre. Students need to do the same. Sometimes your child will need some nursing and cajoling through these patches and they need to learn that in study or in life there is no substitute for consistent effort. Good luck. I hope they don’t, too often, reflect Calvin’s attitude!
Catholic Schools Music Festival was on last weekend in Brisbane. Well over a hundred and fifty of our students participated over almost three days. It was a great experience for all concerned and a magnificent effort on the part of the staff, particularly Mrs Edgar, Mr King and Mr Belluz, who enabled this to happen. The highlight of the weekend was a selected group being able to work with young people from all over Queensland with renowned jazz musician, James Morrison.
Exchange Student opportunities are available from AFS. Shalom has been fortunate to have been able to host a number of students from overseas who have spent a period of time in Australia. It is a great experience for them and for the students with whom they live and interact. AFS provide many opportunities and are looking for host families in the Bundaberg area. There is a degree of mutuality in this in that students who host a child from overseas have an increased likelihood of being chosen for a scholarship to travel to another country. There is more information later in the Newsletter for anyone who might be interested.
Driver Training – the Parents & Friends are supporting the possibility of taking a group of students to Gladstone for a day of Driver Education. There is a cost involved and there are more details later in the Newsletter with a request to respond from those parents who would be interested.

The safety of our students is paramount. Can I please ask that you NOT drop off your son or daughter in the bus zone, outside the Sports Centre or outside the canteen areas.
There is a designated drop off zone for students in the public car park. I would be most appreciative if all parents would use this. I thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
In the past few days I have had occasion to ring a parent concerning their child. On doing so I have found that our contact records are not up-to-date. In an emergency it is essential that we have accurate records and that we can contact you. If you have new home phone numbers or a new work number could you please forward these new contact details to the College office.
Shalom College has a very good reputation in the community as you know and probably one of the reasons that you have chosen the College for your son or daughter. One of the items we address at interviews is the fact that we do have a grooming policy that we adhere to. Most teachers are vigilant in the up-keep of our standards.
I would ask that you not allow your daughters to wear makeup to the College please. They will be asked to remove it.
As you are also aware piercings are not allowed so it disappoints me that teachers, Coordinators or I have to still address this problem with a few students. Being in the last phases of senior schooling does not mean that we drop our standards – they must be adhered to until the end of the year and the student graduates. Most of our young men & women are very good; we have a few who want their individuality to shine! I have been personally contacting parents of those students this matter concerns.
As our senior students, in particular, are role models for our younger students I do not want them setting a poor example for the rest of our community.
And on a brighter note I have spoken about the House system and the vertical pastoral care system with the Yr 11 students. In the coming weeks and into next term, they will be preparing for their very important role of leadership in their Houses next year. It is new and very exciting and a system that will allow our seniors “to shine”.
Please contact me here at the College should you have any concerns about any of these issues.

Being a reader is fundamental to learning; it opens doors and creates opportunities. Therefore, the library at Shalom is holding a Great Book Swap on Wednesday September 1 to highlight the joy of being able to read and also to raise money for books and literacy resources for indigenous children living in remote communities. The Indigenous Literacy Project works in partnership with the Fred Hollows Foundation and for the past four years has raised funds to help address literacy problems in many communities. Last year, 15,000 books were sent to 160 remote communities around Australia.
The idea is that teachers and students donate one of their favourite books and pay a gold coin donation to swap it for someone else’s book.
It is being held at this time because Children’s Book Week occurs on the 21st-27th August and National Literacy and Numeracy Week is celebrated on the 30 August – 5th September.
Students and teachers can start bringing in their contributions at any time until the 1st September.

Catholic Schools Festival – What a fantastic weekend at Catholic Schools Festival (QCMF) 160 Shalom College students participated in the festival this year which was held over a three and a half day period. Our awards included Gold for String Orchestra A, Silver for String Orchestra B, Choir, Vocal Ensemble, Concert Band, Monday Morning Band and Bronze for the Jazz Band. Thank you to all students, parents and teachers who attended and supported their children/students for the festival.
Honours groups – This year, QCMF celebrated their 20th anniversary since the festival’s inception. Out of the 25 students that we nominated for the various honour groups, 13 were chosen to workshop and perform with 500 other students in the Queensland Performing Arts Complex (QPAC) on Sunday night. In addition to some of the best music specialists in Australia tutoring the groups, the students workshopped with none other than James Morrison and his band. During the concert that night, James and his band played and sang with all the Junior and Senior groups. A very special and memorable night for all of our students. There were also approximately 20 students from St Patrick’s and 1 from St Mary’s participating. Green and Red vests certainly stood out in the ‘crowd’.
Music Support Group – The next meeting for this group will be Tuesday evening 24th August at 7.00pm in the music room at the back of the Precinct. All welcome.
Musicfest – We have nominated 3 of our groups to travel to Brisbane for the annual Musicfest competitions. These will be Concert Band (16/10/10), Choir (17/10/10) and String Orchestra A (20/10/10). Students need to tell us NOW if they are not available for these dates. An information letter including travel costs and medical form will be distributed very soon.

The Annual Rotary Quiz was held on the evening of Tuesday, 10 August, at the Old Bundy Tavern as part of the dinner meeting. Shalom College was represented by Year 12 students Ella Whately, Brent Loeskow and Tim Sexton. Seven district schools competed in the competition. Questions covered a range of subject areas and general knowledge. While the team was unsuccessful, Ella Whately was placed fourth in the individual section. The best result for the evening came from the supporting teacher, Ms McCulloch, who won the Teachers’ Competition with an outstanding effort. Brother Rochford attended as well to offer the team valuable support.
