Principal's Reflection

During this week, I came across one of our students who was upset because the anniversary of her Dad’s death was not far away.  It was one of those times where I thought my best option was to sit there and keep my mouth shut.  However, I found myself envying her as she grieved.  If my Dad had died when I was an adolescent, I don’t think I would have reacted in the same way this young girl did.  It was that stage in my life where Dad and I ‘butted heads’ on just about everything.  I am so very grateful that my dad died many years later and by that time, I had grown up a lot and maybe, he had softened a bit.  I now have great memories of my Dad – for all his very many imperfections.  The young girl I was with had wonderful memories of her Dad and I just think that is a wonderful gift.  Wouldn’t it be so much sadder if a person is not remembered fondly by those closest to them?  This man’s life was obviously worthwhile – he made a very significant difference in at least one person’s life.  I don’t think that there is anything more rewarding in life than that.  Memory is one of the greatest gifts that we have.  The ability to cherish great memories ensures that the lives of those who inspire us, live on.  I hope that everyone of us has lots of those sort of people in our lives.

Catholic Schools Race Day - The Race Day Committee recently held a function to thank our sponsors and also distribute the proceeds from this year’s Catholic Schools Race Day.  Thank you once again to all the sponsors from the day, the volunteers who helped the organising committee and people who supported the day despite the weather.  An incredible $5,000 was donated to each of the Catholic Schools, which is a tremendous result given the inclement weather leading up to and on the race day.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of any good organization.  This was very visibly displayed last weekend at the Head of the River Regatta that Shalom won convincingly.  Our Rowers rely on the volunteer hours put in by a huge number of parents and coaches.  Our success is dependant upon this every year.  Thank you to all of those who contributed to a great team effort and well done to our rowers who brought the trophy back to Shalom for the 18th year in a row.

Red Shield – on the topic of volunteers, the annual Red Shield appeal will be on Sunday May 30th.  At the College Assembly this week, the students were spoken to by a representative from the Salvation Army and the Yr 11 & 12 students were asked to consider giving up three hours on the day to collect.  I am sure that, once again, our students will be very generous in their response.

The College Formal is on next Wednesday evening.  This will again be a great evening for the students and their parents.  I hope that parents ensure that their sons and daughters are well supervised before and after the event.

No Newsletter next week – given the shortness of the week – Thursday Show Holiday and Friday Student Free, we won’t publish a Newsletter.

Hospitality

On Thursday May 13th the regions Macadamia Nut Industry conducted its third annual ‘schools challenge’. A cooking competition held in the kitchens of Bundaberg TAFE College and open to all senior secondary school students. This year Shalom College was proudly represented by 2 teams; the black team of Madison Clarey and Sally Lewis and the red team made up of Laura Williamson and Christo Groot.

The competition required the students to replicate two meals within each of the three courses within a two hour timeframe. Each team spent many hours in and out of class time, researching, planning and trialling their meals, with of course ‘macadamia nuts’ as the core ingredient.

A fantastic effort was put in by all 4 students with Maddison and Sally successful in winning the dessert section with their ‘caramelised macadamia nut tartlet’. Unfortunately they were narrowly pipped for the overall prize by a very competent team from Rosedale State High.

As a teacher of Hospitality and as someone who has come from a trade background, I could not be prouder of the strength of character displayed under intense scrutiny; and the skills and composure exhibited by four exceptional young people.

Mr Shaun Cameron
Head of Hospitality

Before and After School Maths Tutoring

Given some apparent misconceptions that seem to have arisen about this service, I would like to clarify the free Mathematics tutoring offered to students by some staff of Shalom College.

The service was never intended as a one-one tutoring service. The Mathematics tutoring offered by Shalom teachers was only ever intended as an opportunity for students, before or after school, to have concepts clarified that may have given them difficulty in class. The amount of time available to assist each student depends on the number of students who turn up at any given session, and this can vary considerably, but about 5-6 sessions are offered each week.

There are usually several teachers available at a session, and students can also benefit from assistance from other students at the sessions. Should individual tuition be required, parents should contact teachers or organisations outside of the College who provide that type of service on a per hour cost basis

Quiet Achievers

A teacher has recommended Year 10 student Jack Fuller for this week’s quiet achiever award.

Jack has been very helpful and supportive of students who have special needs. He is also polite and helpful at all times. A real quiet achiever!

Performing Arts News

Redlands College– Students from the Concert Band and Vocal Ensemble have been invited to participate in workshops with this College from Brisbane and St Luke’s Anglican School. This will be a great opportunity for our students to join other like minded students over the weekend of 4th and 5th June. Notes are currently being distributed to students from both groups. We would like to see a good roll up.

Catholic Schools Festival– At this stage, I haven’t much to inform you re this wonderful festival in Brisbane, but the dates this year are 13-15th August. It is a special event this year being their 20th and they are celebrating with special honour groups on Sunday 15th August performing with the legendary trumpeter James Morrison. We have put forward several students’ names for these groups, but have not heard as yet who will be invited. When we do hear, I’ll contact these students, but they must be prepared to travel to Brisbane for a rehearsal a few weeks prior.

Musicfest– This is another competition held in Brisbane and we will be sending students from Concert Band, String Orchestra A and Choir. As yet, there are no dates for this competition, but it will be during October.

Schedule of performances for the year – If there are any students who have misplaced the timetable handed out earlier this year, please contact me and I can email a new one or give you a hard copy to paste on your home notice boards. The timetable outlines all performances for the year.

INTER SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
A sea of red was all that could be seen from a distance when I turned up to the Interschool Teams Cross Country Event at St Luke’s two Wednesdays ago.  The fantastic numbers of Shalom students competing was a tribute to the hard work Mrs Stephensen puts in.  And the results were fantastic, with Shalom and St Luke’s battling out day one honours.  Of the ten age groups running, Shalom won three races (14yrs Boys and Open Girls and Boys Divisions) and had seven second place finishes in other divisions.  The individual event was held at Gin Gin on Wednesday 19th May.  Congratulations to all runners on a great team effort coming from 3 points behind after the relay event to win the overall trophy by  50 points. Shania Kleidon (13yrs) and Sam Daff (Opens) were named age champions. A total of 26 students have been selected to represent Bundaberg at the Wide Bay Championships next month. A tremendous effort.

ROWING
Congratulations to the Shalom College Rowing team who competed in the Head of the River Rowing Regatta at Bucca on the weekend.  Shalom won an 18th consecutive HOR Champion School Trophy.

Rowing is the only sport at Shalom predominantly run by the ‘parents and volunteers’ of the Shalom Rowing Community.  However, they would not be able to ‘function’ without the dedication and time put in from our Shalom Rowing co-ordinator Miss Janet Brennan.  Janet has been an integral part of Shalom rowing and maintains a strong liaison between students and the Shalom Rowing Community.  Rowing Co-ordinator is possibly one of the toughest sporting roles in the school as Rowing has close to one hundred students involved and it is a lot more work than ‘just handing out forms’.  I would like to personally thank Janet and her ‘team’ of parents and volunteers for all the long hours put in to a very successful Shalom College Rowing program.  Keep up the great work!!

WINTER SPORT
The Winter Sports season is only  two weeks away so selection trials will be taking place next week.  It is important that the students listen to the notices or they may miss out on Winter Sports.  Good luck for another Winter Sports season!!

Head of the River

On Sunday 16 May, ninety-three Shalom rowers took to the Bucca rowing course with intentions of defending the Head of the River title for 2010. For the 18th consecutive year, rowers of our college have been successful in gaining this title by dominating the river in most events. Of the 13 major trophies contested, Shalom rowers came home with ten, proving to be a difficult opposition to the other schools.

We would like to extend a big thank you to all coaches, teachers, parents and students of both Shalom and the other participating schools who were involved in the timely and costly preparations of this event. We would also like to thank Br Rochford for his continued support of Shalom rowing.

Lastly a huge thank you must go to our fellow crewmen for competing at such a high level and for displaying very impressive river etiquette. We are sure that you will all agree that it was a very rewarding weekend for everyone involved. May the high standard of our Shalom rowers continue to soar for many year to come.

Yours in rowing
Elisha Silcox and Liam Clancy
Rowing Captains

Pause-A-While

PENTECOST SUNDAY
John 14: 15-16, 23-26

Happy Birthday!! We recall Luke’s Gospel ending with the words, “I am sending the promise (Holy Spirit) of my Father upon you; stay in the city (Jerusalem) until you are clothed with power from on high” (Luke 24:49)

This is the same promise Jesus makes to his disciples in his farewell discourse: “I shall ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate (Holy Spirit) to be with you forever”. (John 14:16)

Jesus further reassures his disciples that, “the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all I have said to you!! (John 14:26) You did receive the Holy Spirit in Baptism and Confirmation.

Do you believe that? When was the last time you asked the Holy Spirit’s help? Remember, becoming a truly loving person is only possible with the Holy Spirit’s help.“Love is of God”. Think about that!! “Love” is a gift that only God can give.

I pray that all of us, with the help of the Holy Spirit, may become truly loving people, who can witness to Jesus Christ, and the God-of-Love, whom Jesus revealed to the world.

And now I bid you all farewell. I trust that those of you, who have read “Pause-A-While”, have found it helpful in understanding the Gospel, and in coming to know the Risen Jesus.

Fr John Daly is now the Parish Priest. I will continue to help until June 6th, and will then move to Rockhampton.

“May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May the Lord let his face shine on you;
Be gracious to you, uncover his face and give you Peace”.

Fr Terry

THANK YOU

Staff and students of Shalom college would like to express our thanks to Fr Terry for all that he has contributed to our community during his many year in Bundaberg. Not only has he provided our Pause-a-While section each week but has also played a huge role in our spiritual formation through his commitment to our school liturgies and masses. We will miss you and wish you every happiness and best wishes in your retirement.

Australian Catholics

The Winter 2010 edition of Australian Catholics is out and many of the students in our Religious Education classes will soon be receiving copies to read and discuss. We encourage students to take their copy home so that parents also get a chance to have a look at it. This edition of the magazine looks at the global mission of our Church, and features the stories of Australians working in developing countries. It also highlights how schools and parishes in our own country are living out Christ's mission to the world. Make sure you read this very interesting edition, and take some time to reflect on ways our community can better engage with people in need around the globe.
