Principal's Reflection

Next week is Catholic Education Week.  Catholic schools around the nation celebrate, with pride, their place in the fabric of Australian life and culture.  In Australia today there are 1700 Catholic schools educating 704,000 students – 20% of the student population.  Catholic schools, like Shalom, are inspired by the story of Jesus.  Every day we try to live up to the challenge of being forgiving, of being compassionate, of being loving.  We also do out best to provide our young people with the best opportunities and challenge each of them to be the best people that they can be.  Many parents seek enrolment in Catholic schools who are of different faith traditions and this, in many ways, enriches the culture of our schools.  Catholic Schools, like society, have developed and improved over the years.  When I went to school it was pretty common that every kid in my class was Catholic.  When I was at school we were slowly coming out of that period in history when society was very divided along sectarian lines.  There was a pretty strong expectation that we had to be prepared to defend, ‘the faith of our fathers’.  This was not a period in our history that either the Church or society should be particularly proud of.  The sentiments shared by Lucy with Linus in the cartoon would have been pretty common.  Religious belief meant for many that one group saw themselves as better than another and it was impossible to dialogue with other groups.  The God I believe in is very happy that those days are behind us.  Catholic schools do offer something different.  The message and story of Jesus offers hope to the world.  Catholic schools exist to make that hope a reality – our schools exist, not to be different but to make a difference.

Random Acts of Kindness –
is the theme for Catholic Education Week.  Earlier this year, a visitor to the College, Br Damien Price spoke on Assembly to the students about meeting a young man called Godfrey in Uganda.  Godfrey lives in a slum but desperately wants to be able to improve his life.  He has a real interest in film-making but had no way of raising the $1500 a year for three years to attend the University to do the course.  Shalom students have undertaken to fund Godfrey’s education.  Students from the college have already raised $1170 by way of donations and a lamington drive for this cause.  I got an email from Godfrey recently after we sent enough money for him to be able to start this course.  To say that he is very excited and grateful is an understatement.  Random Acts of Kindness make the world go around.

Dr Helen Huntly concludes her term as Chair of the College Board.  Helen as a parent and as a Board member has made a tremendous contribution to the life of Shalom.  She leaves this position and the close association she has had with the College with our very sincere thanks for all that she has done and been. Mr Peter Hawe will take over the position as Chair of the College Board.

Yr 10 Subject Selection Evening is on this coming Tuesday evening commencing at 7pm in the Performing Arts building.  I strongly encourage parents of Year 10 students to attend this event, with your child, to hear the presentations from staff and to think carefully about subject choices for Yr 11 & 12.  There are plenty of ‘myths’ still alive and well around subject choices.  Some people still think that their child will definitely get a better OP result studying a particular subject.  Others believe that if choices worked for an older child, they will work for this child.  Some young people make decisions largely influenced by their friends.  This is an important stage in the life of our young people.  Please make every effort to attend.

Sakado High School Students from Japan will arrive at Shalom this week.  I am sure that they will be made to feel very welcome here.  I am very grateful to those families who are hosting these students.

Year 9 NAPLAN Tests 2011

The National Assessment Program literacy and numeracy (NAPLAN) tests will be conducted in all Queensland schools on 10, 11 and 12 May 2011.

The tests will assess students in the areas of literacy (including reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar) and numeracy (number, measurement, chance and data, space, working mathematically, algebra function and pattern). The results from these tests will be used for individual student reporting to parents, school reporting to the community, and aggregate reporting by the State against national standards.

All Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students enrolled in State, Catholic and Independent schools will be required to sit on the test days. Parents are asked to ensure that their children will be available to sit the tests on the test days and that family commitments are not planned for the test week. Parents who have concerns about their child’s availability to sit the test are welcome to contact me on 4155 8111.

More detailed information regarding the tests and preparation arrangements at Shalom College will be communicated early in 2011.  In the meantime, further general information is available from the NAPLAN website at www.naplan.edu.au  or the Queensland Studies Authority website at www.qsa.qld.edu.au .

Performing Arts Notes

Catholic Schools Festival – I am still waiting for several students to return their form re travel and accommodation requirements for the festival. 200 forms were printed and distributed and there are NOT 200 students going. So, there are some students who have not bothered to fill the form out and return as required before the holidays. Please check if your student has returned their form. Please contact me by email if you wish to check. It is a HUGE job to coordinate this weekend, so I need all the cooperation I can get.

BBQ – the next BBQ for the music department will be 1st August and will be run by the members of Concert Band, Monday Morning Band and Jazz groups. Could families please let me know as soon as possible if they can help out. Forms have been distributed to most students this week. Monday Morning Band missed out, so if there are any families from that group that can help, please let me know by email as soon as possible. Otherwise there will be a form distributed at Monday’s rehearsals.

Rhapsody Rotorua 2012 – I will commence planning for this tour during term 4. If students would like to put their name down now, please contact me and I’ll start a list.

WINTER SPORT RESULTS

WEEK 3
Rugby League:
U14 - A Shalom side missing several players raced to 16 - 0 lead against Bundaberg High. Excellent go forward from props Jordan Mott and Sam Bylsma laid the platform for scheming half back Daniel McLennan to link  with speedy outside backs Luke Williamson and James Delaney. A try right on halftime to Bundy High reduced the lead to 10. A strong opening to the second half by Bundy High resulted in scores being level midway through the second half. Tigerish defence led by Tyla Hodge managed to keep the Bundy High attack at bay for long periods of time. A brilliant 80 metre solo effort by Luke Williamson gave Shalom the lead, and the result was sealed with a late try to Daniel McLennan.  A tremendous spirited effort by all players. Special thanks  to U13 players Denyon Lister, Blair Bretag and Lachlan Trace who filled in after playing full games in the U13 match.  Final Score – Shalom 24 defeated BSHS 16.

WEEK 4
Basketball
Junior Boys - Shalom White defeated St Luke’s 99 – 7.  Dominant game from the big guys – Sam Treloar and Julian Ebert.  Great shooting by Jake Bennett and Luke Pickard.
Football
Junior Boys - Shalom Red defeated BSHS 2 – 9 – nil.  Shalom with it’s blend of Yr 8, 9 & 10 combined well to defeat BSHS 2.  The team will improve as it works on more combinations across the park.  Seven different goal scorers for the game.  Shalom’s best were Jordi Marcon, Iggy Keil, Jackson Skopp, Tim Escher.
Rugby League
U13 - A heavily undermanned Shalom team took on Bundy High in a top of the table clash. The Shalom boys came out fired up and held tight in defence in the first half. They also showed some superb attack to lead 18-0 at halftime. Despite Bundy High having a mountain of penalties in their favour in the second half the Shalom boys held firm and ended up victors 26-4. Man of the Match was impossible as every player played to their full potential and did the team proud.
U14 Shalom v Rosedale
A strong opening to the match from both teams. Powerful charges from front rowers Robert Canino and Paul Kawjeski set a great platform and Shalom established a 10 -0 lead at halftime. Excellent darting runs from creative hooker Callum Gavin, and an outstanding passing and running game from half Daniel McLennan ensured  plenty of time and space for dynamic outside backs Luke Williamson,  James Delaney  and Jarrod Crook to take advantage. Shalom  eventually ran out winners 30-0. Special thanks to U13 players Kyle Spry and Lachlan Lanskey who filled in as reserves.  MVP – Callum Gavin.
Hockey
Shalom defeated St Luke’s 4 – 0.  Ashleigh Martin was the standout for Shalom scoring two goals.  Amanda Vicenzotti, in goal again displayed a courageous effort throwing her body at everything that came near goal giving St Luke’s strikers no chance of getting past.

WEEK 5
Basketball
Open Boys - Shalom defeated St Luke’s 29 – 28.  In a very hard fought encounter, yours truly stepped in as coach and witnessed one of the best finishes to a match.  Shalom were behind all game and with 30 seconds left on the clock and behind by 4 points. Up stepped Ben Davis and  dropped a ‘bomb’ from the half way line for 3 points.  Then some tough defence forced the turnover, and with only a couple of seconds left on the clock it was the go to man, Ben Davis, who banked home the two pointer and stole the match for Shalom.  Shalom fought hard with Brent Loeskow and Chris Longhurst strong on the boards but the accolades must go to Ben Davis, a game he will never forget.
Rugby League
Open 1sts - Shalom defeated BSHS 44 – 18.  Shalom’s MOM was Matt Gavin.
U14 - Shalom defeated NBSHS 28 – 10.
Hockey
Shalom defeated both NBSHS and St Luke’s on forfeits.

Rowing News

Last weekend was a busy one for the Shalom Rowing community. Sam Pickett, Rowing Queensland’s Development Manager, ran a development camp for coaches and rowers at the Bucca rowing course. The trials for the Bundaberg team to contest the Inter-regional Championships was also conducted at this camp.

The following Shalom students were selected in the inter-regional teams: Rebecca Surmon (Open girls), Daniel Brame (Open boys), Michael Latter, Ryan Lester and Mitchell Styles (U16 Boys). These students will begin training in preparation for the Inter-regional Championships in September.

The Sex and the City 2 Movie Fundraiser was held at the Moncrieff Theatre on Saturday night. The night was well supported and was a successful fundraiser for Shalom Rowing. I would like to thank the many Shalom families and local businesses who donated towards the night. A big thank you must go to the Shalom students who modelled in the fashion parade and provided food service on the night. The success of the night is largely accredited to the dedicated fundraising committee of Traci Thornton, Fiona Canniffe and Pauline Shaxson. These ladies worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of the night.

This weekend our Rowing team will travel to Kawana to compete in the Southern Queensland Schools Championships. The students will be up against some of the toughest competition in the state so we wish them well in their racing.

Confraternity Rugby League

During the first week of the holidays the Open Confraternity Rugby League team ventured off to Brisbane to compete in the 2010 Confraternity Carnival. Like always the players were full of mixed emotions. Those who played in the previous year had experience and knew what to expect; however, there were a number of players that had not experienced rugby league at this level before. One thing all of the players knew though was that there was a big task ahead of them.

Our first game was against Emmaus 2 of Rockhampton and it wasn’t long until the players realised the level of Confraternity rugby league. Points were acquired by both teams but Shalom were the victors with a 22–10 win over Emmaus 2. The halfback, Matt Gavin was awarded Man of the Match. Also on the Monday we had to confront Southern Cross who is frequently seen to be a competitive school in this division. Shalom obtained the only points in the first half but both teams loaded the points in the second half. Morgan Ortt was named Man of the Match due to his impressive work ethic throughout the game and Shalom was victorious with an 18 -10 win.

By the end of the day the players had felt the impact of this level of Rugby League but all seemed to be in good spirits and there were no major injuries. In Tuesday’s matches Shalom experienced mixed results. The morning game was against Sienna of the Sunshine Coast and Shalom had limited possession and this resulted in a loss of 18-6. Matt Craven was named Man of the Match for his impressive ability to gain metres in the game even with limited possession. With two wins and one loss the players were ready to redeem themselves in the quarterfinal, and that they did. The completion rate was the best they had seen so far at the carnival and the results reflected this with a 34–0 win over Xavier College of Hervey Bay. Matt Craven was awarded Man of the Match but it was certainly team effort that claimed the victory with structured attack and impressive defence.
In the semi-final on Thursday Shalom were to be confronted by St Michael’s of the Gold Coast who were well known to present an impressive second division rugby league team. The intensity of the first half was great to watch as both teams presented all they had. Unfortunately the only points Shalom were to score were in the first half and they were defeated 30-4 by St Michaels. Shane Gorman was named Man of the Match due to determination and support play throughout the game. Shalom faced Gilroy Santa Maria in the final and both teams had felt the effects of the carnival with some players carrying injuries. Regardless, both teams played with enthusiasm and the pace was still frenetic. Patrick Kaufusi was named Man of the Match due to his impressive number of hit ups and tackles, with the final score being 28-28.

The whole week was a success both on and off the field. The work ethic and team dynamics was impressive to watch over the week. All players represented Shalom extremely well and experienced the Confraternity Spirit throughout the carnival.

Another aspect that contributed to the success of the week was the hard work put in by many staff. Thank you to Mr Vince Habermann (statistics), Mr Chappel (manager), Mr Smith (assistant manager), Mr Gills, Mr Col Fritz (sports medicine), Mr Stephensen (trainer) and Mr Gilbert (Coach) and Brother Rochford (video and photos). Also, a big thank you to Rum City Foods for their continued support through sponsorship.

Mr Joe O’Driscoll
