Principal's Reflection

One of the most basic human responses to anything is to ask, ‘What’s in it for me?”.  We’d all like to think that our motives are always as pure as the driven snow but there is often a nagging voice reminding us that self interest is never far from the surface. In this week’s Sunday Gospel Jesus challenges his listeners at the time and us, just as relevantly 2000 years later, to be less concerned about what we could receive in return from those who we invite to sit at our table.  Jesus challenges us to respond to those most ‘on the edge’ without wondering what we will get in return.  This is at the heart of the Kin(g)dom of God.  If Julia Gillard or Tony Abbott were to host a lunch this weekend, I wonder who they would invite.  I would not be surprised to think that the guest list might include some Independent members of Parliament who, each of them would hope, would be able to do a lot for them in return!  On the topic of the election, as I waited and queued to vote, I found myself impatient at the long wait (probably about 5 minutes).  Fortunately, as I waited, I thought about how lucky I am to live in a country where I can vote without fear of intimidation or coercion.  Also, even with an inconclusive result, we still just go about our business without worrying about any disgruntled group taking the law into their own hands.  This is a great country.  Each day over the last couple of weeks we have read about the unfolding disaster in Pakistan.  Tens of millions of people have lost their homes and the infrastructure in one of the world’s poorest countries has been disastrously affected.  Our students will be asked to make a donation this week to Caritas to assist those in such dire need.  I wonder how many of us would be willing to invite the poor and dispossessed of Pakistan to our tables – they would never be able to repay us.  This week’s Gospel is another of those challenges that made Jesus unpopular – no wonder he got crucified.

Yr 8 & 9 Subject Selections will be on Tuesday evening in the Performing Arts Centre.  Yr 9 parents are invited to attend from 6pm to learn about Elective offerings for their daughters and sons for next year.  Yr 8 parents are invited to attend from 7pm to assist them in making subject choices for Year Nine.  Students are welcome and encouraged to attend with their parents.

QCS Test is on next week for our Seniors and all Senior students throughout the State.  Tuesday and Wednesday will be big days for our young people.  We wish them every success at this pretty crucial time.

Yr 11 Leadership Days will coincide with the Yr 12 QCS test.  During these two days, the Yr 11 class will work on the skills they will need to take up their role as leaders at Shalom.  Next year, as we move fully to a Vertical House structure, every Year 12 student will have the opportunity and invitation to be a leader in their House and in their PC group.

Consequences for Choices – there are a few rules at Shalom that we think are important enough for us to put a very large deterrent on them – Saturday morning detention.  Chewing gum at school and throwing food are two of these.  Students are made very aware of these rules, there are no surprises.  If a student chooses the behaviour, they consciously choose the consequences.  Therefore I am surprised to hear, on just a couple of occasions, that a parent will protest to the College that their child is unable to do this because it is inconvenient for one reason or another.  We will, from our end, always be open to negotiate timings and I am very aware that some commitments are not able to be moved.  I would also expect that parents will support the College on these very clearly outlined expectations of appropriate behaviour.

Year 8 Religious Education

Year 8 Religious Education – Consistency of Teacher Judgement

Ensuring that teachers are consistent when assessing and making judgements, with regards to student’s work, is something that all stakeholders in education desire.  Within Religious Education this consistency is even more important, especially when criteria based assessment is used. To help achieve this consistency the Diocesan Education Office has established a formalised process of Consistency of Teacher Judgement (CTJ) meetings to review assessment procedures in Religious Education.

To prepare for the CTJ meetings Year 8 Religious Education teachers will be undertaking a special task with their classes over the next couple of weeks.  Shalom teachers will then have the opportunity to work closely with the other Catholic primary schools, within Bundaberg, sharing their judgements and thoughts on how they judge student work.

This task will not be used as a formal assessment task for the students, though it is linked with the current unit on inspirational people.  Obviously student confidentiality will be of the highest priority when sharing work samples with other teachers.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any queries.

Rugby League Steve Renouf Shield
The Under 13’s Rugby League has been participating in the Steve Renouf Shield for the past few months. This competition is a knockout competition run for rugby league schools in South East Queensland.

The team won the Bundaberg Division by beating Bundy High in the middle of last term to progress through to face the winner of the Fraser Coast region, Xavier College from Hervey Bay.

Shalom won this game convincingly and progressed through to play Kingaroy State High School for the Wide Bay Division final. After a long bus trip the team stepped out of the bus into the freezing weather of Kingaroy. The team soon however warmed up with some red hot play to win 50-4.

After the break for school holidays we played our next match against the Sunshine Coast winners, Nambour. This match was played to decide the winner of the Ian “Bunny” Pearce Memorial Shield which Shalom had never won. After a flying start where the boys were up 16-0 in the first ten minutes the Nambour side woke up and made the contest very hard. Despite a late flourish in both halves from Nambour the boys managed to hang on for 26-22 victory.

This win meant that the team was now in line for the Quarter Finals of the competition and had to face Wavell State High School from Brisbane. Wavell were superior and their rugby league program is obviously paying dividends as they were victorious 48-4. The Shalom boys did not let them win without a fight though and came out firing in the second half but the weight of possession soon led to Wavell again dominating.

Congratulations to the team who represented our College with the pride and sportsmanship we are known for. A big thank-you to Mr Aplin and Mr Robinson who drove the buses for our trip.

Interschool rugby league report – under 13’s  - The under 13 rugby league team polished off an outstanding season with victory in the grand final against Bundaberg State High School 46-4. Lachlan Lanskey was again at his best in the final scoring a bag of tries and collecting the man-of-the-match award presented by former Broncos legends Michael De Vere and Michael Hancock.

Well done to the boys who represented our school with their sportsmanship and determination. Thank you to the parents who made sure that the boys were at trainings and games.

Under 14 Rugby League Report - Grand Final

After defeating Kepnock 12-6 in the major semi Shalom went into the grand final full of confidence, however we were dealt a blow prior to the game when halfback Daniel McLennan and lock and captain Aiden Dempsey were ruled out with injury.  Heavy rain made handling conditions difficult.  A brilliant 90 metre solo try to flying centre Patrick Robinson saw Shalom race to a 6 nil lead in the opening minutes, led by  rugged forwards Jordan Mott, Joel Wilson and Paul Kajewski, Shalom matched the bigger Kepnock side in the opening exchanges. A try by Kepnock resulted in the scores being level at the break. Some enterprising play by  Callum Gavin and  James Delaney saw Shalom go close to scoring early in the second half.

Some errors resulted in Kepnock dominating possession and they were able to take advantage and post two tries. Despite this Shalom kept attacking with Luke Williamson a constant threat to the opposition and tackling machine Tyla Hodge leading the way in defence  In the end Kepnock scored a late try to seal the game.  Halves Jarrod Crook and Jake Yates did their best to create  in trying conditions whilst Sam Bylsma in the unfamiliar position of centre was very strong, wingers Zach Hrelja and Joel Walker were excellent in defence, whilst reserves Michael Rasmussen and Jakob Roberts lifted the team with their enthusiasm.

An excellent effort with the never say die attitude which had been a feature of the sides play all season again on display. Congratulations on a wonderful season. Final score 24-6 Kepnock.

Year 10 Life Science CPR Lessons

I wish to extend a very big thank you to Maria & Darryl Murray for giving up their time and expertise to help some of our Year 10 students learn about Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).  As part of their Living Dangerously Unit, Year 10 Life Science students have been studying how accidents occur both at home and on the road along with immediate first aid actions for these situations. Students from the four Life Science classes have been fortunate to have the expertise of Maria and Darryl from First Aid Alive to teach them CPR. Maria & Darryl very kindly gave up their own time to come to the school and instruct the classes, bringing with them numerous resuscitation mannequins so that the students could learn through valuable hands on demonstrations.

Quiet Achiever of the Week

While this award usually goes to a deserving student, this week’s Quiet Achiever is a dedicated member of the teaching staff, Ms Stephenie McCulloch. The Annual Rotary Schools’ Quiz was held recently as part of the club’s normal dinner meeting. Traditionally, as an integral component of the competition, the teachers who are responsible for the school teams must themselves submit to a round of questions to vie for the top honour. This year, Ms McCulloch successfully answered 9 of the 10 questions asked, to stand alone as the winning teacher. This was a very creditable effort, indeed!

From the Resource Centre

The library has purchased 3 Kobo readers which allow students to read a book electronically. This e-book reader measures 12cms by 18cms and is extremely portable. It comes pre-loaded with 100 books but other books can be downloaded, usually at a cheaper price than a hard copy. Students who embrace technology will find it convenient while others will always prefer to physically hold a book in their hands. There is a place for both in this day and age.

Students are able to borrow a reader like a book for a 2 week period. While they are quite sturdy, it is expected that students will take extra care in using them, keeping food and drink out of the way.

A reminder for students to please bring in one of your favourite books before September 1st so you can participate in the GREAT BOOK SWAP.
