As I write this reflection, I am on the Year 12 Retreat at the Sunshine Coast. I never miss attending these because it reminds me why I love being in this business. Schools, like any other organization or individual, can get distracted from what makes life worthwhile. Schools can and must empathise with our young people the need to apply themselves to the art of learning. We need to work hard to make sure our young people get the best opportunities possible to prepare themselves to enter the world beyond school. But that is not our most important job. Like parents, we have to find time and energy to help young people find out what makes all of that worthwhile. What it will be in life that they will truly value. I am pretty sure that the values that each of them will need will centre on the ability to value relationships and to have enough confidence in themselves and those they love to sustain them through the inevitable times of difficulty and pain. We get to do a bit of that on Retreat. We give time and space to allow spirituality to ‘get real’. We remind them of a God who laughs, a God who calls them to live through the pain of life. They get a chance to reflect on how important their parents and their families are to their journey. They take time to say ‘sorry’ to some people and to say to other students how significant they have been during their years together. I am pretty sure that experiences like this are among the most educative things that the Shalom community can offer young people. I suspect that our Year 12's will draw on these ‘skills’ far more often than they will the lessons we teach them in classrooms. Both need to be done but it is fantastic that we are able to offer this experience in the way it is done. I hope that the parents of our Year 12's will pick up some of this in the discussions they have with their daughters and sons. Those of us who teach and who experience the privilege of being invited by parents into the formation process of their children have the best job in the world.
Jeans for Genes Day - At College Assembly we announced that our school will participate in Jeans for Genes Day on 6 Aug. Firstly, it was explained to the students that we are participating to help heighten awareness and secondly, to raise money for this cause. The implication here will be that this day is not a fashion parade. There have been some clear guidelines set as to what is to be worn.- jeans only, any colour - not shorts etc. with a school sport shirt or senior jersey for Year 12. If students have neither of these, another school shirt that identifies them as part of the Shalom community is acceptable i.e. a drama shirt, school trip shirt, etc.. The only other alternative is their white or blue regular uniform shirt. Shoes must be closed in and securely attached e.g. sport shoes (school shoes if they have no others) - definitely no sandals, thongs etc.
Farewell visitors - This week we farewell the students from Sadako High School. I am sure the students enjoyed their stay with host families and learnt a lot about the culture of Australia. Thank you to Miss Yamaguchi and all those involved for making these people feel so welcome and ensuring that our visitors had a memorable stay.

Catholic schools have been providing a quality education for Australian children for over 180 years.
There are 1700 Catholic schools in Australia, with over 700,000 students. In fact one in five Australian school students are educated in a Catholic school.
However when all forms of government funding are considered (that is, both Federal and State), Catholic school students receive substantially less funding per student than government school students.
This means parents and parishes have to contribute more through fees and levies despite Catholic schools striving to keep fees low so that they remain accessible to all children.
Even when parent contributions are taken into account, on average, Catholic schools operate at about 85 per cent of the resourcing level of government schools.

Five students from Shalom College’s Year 11 Business classes attended the annual Ecoman program at Fairymead Mill with students from Bundaberg North, Bundaberg State High and St Luke’s. During this time the students were guided through how to setup and run a small business venture by representatives from the Queensland Private Enterprise Centre. The stimulating three-day program allowed our students to develop successful teamwork and management skills as well as gaining an invaluable insight into the industry skills required in a business enterprise. The program was proudly sponsored by Bundaberg Sugar.
Students who attended Ecoman were Sarah Faliszewski, Robert Hoffman, Christopher Hawe, Craig Dingle and Elise Lane

The quiet achiever this week goes to Tim Oldfield in Year Eleven. Tim represents those students who participated in the school athletic carnival without any reasonable hope of winning. They are commended for their participation thereby scoring a point for their House. Well done Tim you are to be congratulated for ‘having a go’.

Shalom recently participated in the Queensland Secondary Schools Tennis Teams Competition in Gympie on Tuesday, 20th July. Our school was represented by Federico Keil, Ignacio Keil, Matthew Connolly and Braden Connolly. This team of very talented tennis players, produced a dominant performance in their matches.
In the semi-finals Shalom played James Nash SHS, winning all 8 sets played. In the final they played Gympie SHS and reproduced this excellent record and won, again, without losing a set. In fact, on the day, the team won a total of 96 games and their opponents won a total of 7 games – an extraordinary performance. All boys played the game in the best spirit and were excellent ambassadors for our school.
The team will now compete in the State finals in Rockhampton in September with hopes of another good performance.

Poverty is an issue which over a billion people endure every day in violation of their basic human rights, things we as Australians don’t even think about. To those living in poverty sanitation is not a basic right, clean water is not something that comes out of a tap, or is even accessible at all, and hunger is not missing a meal bust missing everyone. Ultimately, poverty isn’t about a lack of resources, it’s about then struggle that people are forced to endure as a result.
The problems these people are faced with are extreme and there is no easy fix, no one solution. But if nothing is done nothing can be achieved and so we ask you to do something. By taking part in this year’s 40Hr Famine you can do something real, something that changes the life of a child living in poverty. So this year, between Friday 20 and Sunday 22 August, give up something, anything. It doesn’t have to be food, to raise awareness and money for people who you will never meet, changes that you will never see and a purpose beyond your capability to imagine, but a need so desperate that you can’t say no. Students can sign up by seeing Miss Emerick in the library.

LOST PROPERTY
Parents, we have numerous items in lost property, the majority of it unnamed. If your child is missing any of the following items have them come to the office and check: black leather shoes, sandshoes, girls day skirts, sports shirts, sports shorts, hats, sports caps (HEAPS), jumpers, socks, tracksuit pants, water bottles. Anything unnamed and unclaimed will be taken over to the uniform shop. It is much easier to return lost items if they are clearly named. Thanks for your assistance.
