Principal's Reflection

The ‘Safe Partying’ information night held this week was pretty well attended.  It was an excellent presentation and very well received.  One of the points that Adair Donaldson, our presenter, made was that for parents making a decision to host a party for young people younger than 18, they take on responsibility for the welfare of those that attend.  They act ‘in loco parentis’ – as another parent.  This has significant implications in law if problems occur during or, sometimes, even after the party.  One of the good tips Adair gave at the meeting was for parents to visit the Qld Police Website and check out the ‘Safe Partying’ guidelines.  Once a party is registered the Police can provide organizers with arm bands for those attending which makes it much more difficult for gate-crashers to attend.  This is the link for QLD Police Party Safe Site.  The other big issue Adair highlighted is the need for parents not to be put off by their children and to ask questions about functions to which they are invited.  I wonder how many parents don’t ask questions about a function by their children telling them that ‘they are the most embarrassing parents in the world!” or something similar?  I was really disappointed to hear on the grapevine that there was a ‘Shalom party’ held last week at the home of a student whose parents had gone away for a couple of days. Needless to say the child’s parents knew nothing of the function and I can only presume that no parent of a child who attended rang the family to ask the usual questions – “Who will be supervising?”  “Will there be alcohol?”  “Who is attending?”  “What time does the party conclude?”  When parents ask those questions, young people often feel indignant and insulted and ask, “Don’t you trust me?”  I hope that I will be always able to trust my kids but I also hope that they never expect me to trust a whole bunch of other people I don’t know well.

Br Rochford made a video of Adair’s talk last night and the video Adair used as the basis of his talk is contained on Brother’s video.  If anyone would like a copy, please contact Brother by email – rochford@shalomcollege.com

My Formative Review – within the Rockhampton Diocese, Principals undertake a ‘Formative Review’ in the second year of their appointment.  I am at that stage at Shalom and my appraisal will be on Wednesday June 23.  A few people will be asked to have an interview with Mr Craig Fairbairn who is an Assistant Director in Catholic Education.  Anyone else who would like to is welcome to participate in this review by obtaining from Mrs Jan Aplin, my secretary, a feedback form which can be returned to the office or forwarded directly to Mr Fairbairn.  After almost eighteen months at Shalom, I welcome and encourage parents to participate in this so that I can benefit from some constructive feedback.

Bishop Brian’s Visit – the College will be pleased to welcome Bishop Brian next Friday when he visits Shalom.  The Bishop will meet as many students as he is able.

Maths Team

A total of fifty students made up ten teams to represent Shalom College at the annual Bundaberg Mathematics Team Challenge held at the Civic Centre on June 11. The event is always strongly contested, and attracts schools from across Bundaberg and also from Gin Gin.

Our Year 8 teams performed exceptionally well, with our Year 8 No. 1 team (Matthew Aplin, Ned Freeman, Kate Jamieson, Jared Paul and Emily Stuart) winning the Year 8 section, and our Year 8 No. 2 side (Jemma Ballinger, Lilly McCracken, Chelsea Allport, Kaylee Mills and Elijah Freeman) following closely in second place.

Our Year 9 No 1 team (Michelle Rekow, Jack Lester, Brock Canniffe, Ben Freeman, and Brody Fox also “punched above their weight” by securing 3rd place in the combined Year 9 and 10 section of the competition.

Our Year 11 and 12 teams also performed creditably, but in a very difficult section of the competition they were unlucky not to secure a place.

Congratulations to all students who participated in what is both a challenging but enjoyable Mathematics competition. Thanks also to parents Lianne Bennett, Sandra Sexton, Phil Freeman and Rodney Allport for their assistance as supervisors during the competition.

Student Welfare

“Now is the time for our communities to make a difference....Welcome to our world....of teenagers” and so began the presentation for parents by Adair Donaldson on ‘Safe Partying’, a topic he is passionate about. With knowledge we can make a difference for our young people. Quite a large number of parents came along to what was a very informative and eye-opening presentation. The video clip he showed was of the parents of a sixteen year old giving their daughter a 16th birthday party. I am sure all the parents in attendance were horrified when they saw what the parents faced as a result of things going wrong. Unfortunately in the eyes of the law having good intentions is not sufficient. Adair stressed accessing the website set up by the Queensland Police Force when hosting a party. The site is: www.police.qld.gov.au  On it is a checklist to use which you will find very helpful.

Exams are looming once again for our students, particularly our Year 11 and 12 students. The exam timetable can be accessed on the College website. I would like to reinforce the guidelines set down by the College when students are on block exams:

Boys are to come for exams clean shaven
Girls need to have their hair tied back as they would for any normal school day
No makeup is to be worn; no nail polish is allowed
No handbags – College bags please
If coming to the College to drop off an assignment or to see a teacher full school uniform is to be worn Drama/Dance students have appropriate attire to wear
Correct uniform for both boys and girls – including the correct black shoes
All students must wear their hats in break times

The majority of our students are very good with their standard of grooming on a daily basis so the exam sessions should not present a difficulty.

If you are a parent of a Year 12 student then you will agree what a wonderful night the Formal was. Congratulations to all the students – the transformation from students to young men and women was amazing. I am sure everyone had a wonderful night. I have never been to a Formal where parents were included for the whole night so I found that to be a great addition... ...... and the dancing practice was worth it!!

Take care
Mrs Elizabeth Austin-Campbell

Table Tennis

A group of eight students (Susan McDonald, Nathan Shelley, Ben Freeman, Ned Freeman, Shanae Barrett, Luke Pickard, Hayden Vincent and Joshua Collins) formed part of a bus-load of students from the Bundaberg region to travel to Brisbane recently to compete in the Southern Queensland Schools Table Tennis Championships. Over fifty teams participated in the tournament, which is increasing in size each year.

Leaving Bundaberg at 3:30am, the students arrived in Brisbane just as the competition was getting under way, and had to play almost non-stop matches until the tournament finished around 4:30pm. They then had a 5 hour bus trip ahead of them for the return journey. It was a fairly quiet trip home for most students.

Despite the long day, it was a very successful day for the Bundaberg students, with five of the six teams competing in the finals across the three divisions coming from the Bundaberg region, reinforcing the strength of competitive table tennis in the local area.

All students played very well but notable success for Shalom College went to Ben Freeman and Ned Freeman who won the Junior high school section. Shanae Barrett and Luke Pickard also finished third in this section.

Congratulations to all students on your efforts in this tournament.

Quiet Achievers

Our quiet achievers for this week are two of our very own teachers. Mr David Gahan and Mr Noel Philips were our parking attendants for the Year 12 Formal Dinner Dance. No wonder we did not have car chaos!

The performances will take place in the precinct theatre over three nights; on the 17th, 18th and 21st of June beginning at 6:30pm each evening. Each night will feature different plays, so come and support these talented students. Entry is by gold coin donation.

Music
Catholic Schools Festival
– In the next newsletter, we will be able to announce who has been successful in being selected to perform in the honour groups during this year’s festival. Also, I should be able to give you more information in relation to the performance timetable. The festival dates are 13th -15th August at Villanova College.

Brass Fanfare – If you attended the senior formal last week, you would have had the pleasure of being summoned to dinner by a wonderful rendition of Brass Fanfare performed by 15 students all from years 8-10. All were very excited and felt very privileged to perform for such a prestigious event. Many thanks to Mrs McDonald for training the musicians.

Next concert – The next concert, of which you are all invited to attend, will be Sunday 20th June starting at 5.00pm in the Precinct Theatre. Groups performing will be Concert Band, Monday Morning Band, Monday Jazz group and the New Zealand tour group. Entry will be a gold coin donation.
