NAIDOC WEEK

21 Jul 2023

NAIDOC WEEK
National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year’s NAIDOC theme was “For Our Elders,” for they are our cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers and our loved ones, who have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families.

Yesterday at Shalom, we invited our whole school community to join us for our own NAIDOC celebrations during lunch, “NAIDOC on the Grass,” while hosting our special guests, Taribelang Bunda Elders, Uncle Wayne, Uncle Willie and Aunty Di, and primary students from St Joseph’s, St Patrick’s, St Mary’s and St John’s.

Our proud Indigenous students, from Year 7 to Year 12, lead art and craft activities, such as face painting, sand art, boomerang painting, scratch art and colouring in. We also shared bushtucker food with everyone, with delicious samples of kangaroo sausages, crocodile tail, commemorative cake and damper.

Thank you to all staff and students involved.
